KAN JAM

How To Play

Setup

  • Kan Jam is a 4-player game with teammates at opposite ends.

  • Kans are set up 50’ apart, and players must throw from behind the Kan.

Gameplay

  • Teams alternate throwing their disc towards their Kan.

  • On each throw, the teammate on the receiving end can deflect the disc.

  • The team that scores the most points in the previous round throws first in the next round.

  • Should a team bust, the total points scored will be deducted from the team's score at the start of the round.

  • Each team gets the same number of throws in the game.

  • If both teams reach 21 in the same round, the game goes into sudden-death overtime, where whoever has the most at the end of the overtime round wins.

  • Overtime rounds continue until there is a winner.

Scoring

  • Teams can score in three different ways:

  • A deflected frisbee hitting the Kan for 1 point.

  • A direct hit on the Kan is worth 2 points.

  • A deflection with the frisbee going inside the Kan is worth 3 points.

  • If the thrower throws the disc directly into the slot, it’s an instant win.

History

As with all great things, Kan Jam was born out of people playing with garbage cans. In 1970, four friends, Rob Mogensen, Joe Raymond, John Kopasz, and Jim Heron, were playing around, throwing a frisbee at a garbage can, creating the game they would call Garbage Can Frisbee.

In the 1980s, Charles Sciandra and Paul Swisher, from Buffalo, New York, played Garbage Kan Frisbee and by the 1990s decided the game could be more. They created KanJam and, in 2005, filed a patent on the game.

Kan Jam, in its infancy, was mostly a game of the northeast, but has now taken the nation by storm. It can be found in retail shops all over the country and has become one of the most well-known and popular games. There are now tournaments all over the nation, and the game is expanding to other countries.

The PDFA (Professional Discflect Association) was formed in 2021 to take the game to the next level and to create an official sport. Tournaments and the world championship are now played under this name.
