How To Play
Setup
Assemble the game and tie the “fly” on the included fly rod
Place the target 15 feet away from the determined casting line.
Gameplay
Players determine who goes first by casting towards the target. The player closest to the base goes first.
Players take turns casting towards the target from 15 feet away. To adjust difficulty, players may adjust the distance from which they cast.
A cast is counted anytime the line hits the ground or target.
For Duel play, the first player to 21 or more points wins the game
Each player gets 5 casts per turn.
Alternate gameplay options
Skunk - played like horse in basketball, players call their shots, and other players must match their shot.
Up The Creek - Players must hit all five targets before their opponents. Each player gets three casts per turn, and targets must be hit in a predetermined order.
Scoring
Bottom rings are worth 1 point
Middle rectangles are worth 2 points
Top ring is worth five points.
There is no cancellation scoring. Each player may score each round.
There is no bust rule in effect. The first to 21 wins.
History
Honeyhole stemmed from a love of flyfishing. The passion for fishing was born in the Catskills, but the game was created in Bozeman, Montana. The game is designed to be as functional as it is fun. While players play, they are also practicing the skills of fly casting.
While the game Honeyhole was created in 2025, the game has been thousands of years in the making. The true origin of fly fishing is unknown, but Roman Author, Claudius Aelian described Macedonian’s fishing in a manner similar to modern-day fly fishing in 200 C.E. Another predecessor of modern fly fishing is tenkara, which was created in Japan.
Fly fishing as a sport began to gain ground in Europe in the 1500s. In the late 1800’s the Catskill Mountains of New York became the epicenter of American dry fly fishing.
